We've taken advantage of Dave and Mary's car while they were with us, driving south to Puerto Viejo and beyond. Our fav spot was a beach on Punta Uva, where you could drive along a dirt road until you saw the perfect place, then park under shady palms right at the edge of the Caribbean. Mostly Costa Rican families there, and no development - just a long stretch of white sand, shady trees, water and reef. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday, although I'm sure we missed the Superbowl or something. Jenny is truly in her element out snorkeling.
We drove up into the hills behind Cahuita searching for our friends Kit and Pam's property. Didn't get quite there - within a km according to my Google Earth gps'ing, but loved seeing the lush hills and farmers carving homesteads out of the rainforest. K&P's project (SEED) is meant to develop more sustainable agricultural practices, so we're excited to see it with Kit on Sunday.
Also had a tour of a traditional cacao (chocolate) operation, run by an indigenous guy and his family who have moved across the border from Panama. A slow, small-scale approach, all done by hand from tending the trees to fermenting, drying, roasting, grinding and squeezing to concentrate the chocolate. We sampled fresh raw chocolate, mixed with a little cane sugar - hot and unbelievably delicious, especially with a crunchy cacao bean wrapped inside!
Chilling today, walking the town and Playa Negra, using our last day at El Encanto's little pool in a jungle garden before moving to the Alby Lodge tomorrow. Love to you all!

Beaches and Cacao

Monkeys!
Yesterday we did a long hike on the trail that parallels the beach in Cahuita National Park. It's lush and gorgeous, rainforest trees, vines, birds and animals right up to the edge of a perfect white sand beach. There are troops of Capuchin and howler monkeys swinging around, at times really close up. You could watch their antics for hours. Mostly very wild, but a few of them are obviously too used to humans, aggressively going for our packs. We also had to ward off raccoons!
Lots of other wildlife including spiders, crabs, lizards, coatis, and everywhere a deep verdant green - true jungle, and you wouldn't want to go off the trail. We didn't see snakes, but others did.
Many Dutch tourists here for whatever reason, all with impeccable English. Our little cabin as are great, and tons of good restaurants. Heard about an 80 car pileup on the 401 in a snowsquall - sorry to miss it...

Pura vida in Cahuita
Ola! It's a lovely morning here in Costa Rica, humid after rain last night. We met Dave and Mary and drove through beautiful lush cloud forest, then coastal plains to get here. Tons of big trucks all the way to Limon, shipping bananas and such to the port. Woke at dawn to a cacophony of birds, walked to the nearby beach - beautiful and desolate looking. Lots of friendly Ticos on the road - very small town, laid back. Now off to explore. These pics are with the tablet camera, so not great, but they give the idea.

Really Really Advanced Stuff!
T-minus...
Here's a decidedly non-tropical pic, just to see if it works:
Ok, I'm feeling old-fashioned. Apparently you can't just upload from your computer - the pic already has to be on the web. Seems like an extra step... Maybe it'll be easier for pics taken with our tablet?
