Palaiochora

Palaiochora is a small town on the far south-west coast of Crete, a mountainous drive from the more developed north. I spent six weeks here in the winter of 1977, and although it's grown from the smaller village it was, it still has some laid-back charm. We got a great deal (25 euros per night) on bright clean rooms overlooking the sea, which has been calm, sunny and very swimmable since we arrived. It's been a great base for exploring the western part of Crete - more on that later.
The 3 of us (Phillipe is with us) are cooking some meals in our apartment - fresh Mediterrean fish - and dining out other nights, hanging with a Finnish couple, eating whatever delicious stuff the chef and his mother want to serve us. Life was good here in 1977, but even fuller and better now, although I do feel the occasional twinge of nostalgia when I see the young backpackers. We're giving rides to whoever we can fit, payback almost 4 decades later!
