The Cradle of Humankind

In the beautiful green rolling hills just outside Johannesburg are caves eroded into the limestone millions of years ago. Although they're too deep and dark to live in, over time various animals have fallen in, including some of our ancestors. A hundred years ago miners took out a lot of mine, destroying most of the fossils, but luckily bringing a few to paleontologists. What remained is still the world's richest source of hominid fossils, including the famous 'Mrs Ples' and 'Little Foot', a complete Australopithecus that they've been slowly extracting for 15 years. There's a great interpretation center, and it's thrilling to see the actual spots where these finds were made in our common African home.
