Many past and present Greeks are deeply religious, and small chapels and shrines dot the countryside, along with the odd monastery. Some are so tiny that only half a dozen people could worship there, and others are almost impossible to reach, so I guess building them was more an act of devotion than a strategic attempt to serve a bigger congregation. Many have frescoes of saints painted centuries ago, and all have little bottles of oil and other sacraments, looking slightly wrong, as they're contained in plastic coke bottles. All are completely open, and usually unattended, another sign of the basic trust people have here.
